How should the IRS be using AI?

IRS employee abuses

“How should the IRS be appropriately using AI in its monitoring of taxpayer transactions? Any improper use of AI raises serious concerns about privacy and abuse. We hope that under new IRS Commissioner Billy Long, explicit AI guidelines will be put in place to protect taxpayers’ privacy.”

Since last year, we've heard reports that some IRS officials may be using AI to surveil Americans’ bank accounts and track their spending.

This led Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to open an inquiry into the IRS’s use of artificial intelligence to monitor Americans' financial information. They say there’s “reason to believe” that the IRS and the Department of Justice are using AI to monitor millions of people’s private financial data—without a warrant or legal process.

We hope that under new IRS Commissioner Billy Long, explicit AI guidelines will be put in place to protect taxpayers’ privacy.
