Careless IRS Blunders Harm Honest Taxpayers
IRS employee abuses
“I notified the IRS [about their mistake] and they agreed that the computer system was processing penalty notices incorrectly. They said they would fix it, but it still hasn’t been fixed.”
– Jeff Levine, Director of Financial Strategies, LGA.
This past week, the IRS admitted to sending penalty notices to taxpayers “erroneously.” Over the past few months, many Americans have received notices claiming that they owed money for underpaid estimated taxes. When many taxpayers confirmed that their taxes were properly accounted for, the IRS acknowledged that its systems were processing penalty notices incorrectly.
Despite the agency’s acknowledgement of the issue, taxpayers still received a second letter from the IRS denoting a final notice of intent to levy. These intents to levy give the IRS the legal authority to seize citizens’ property, including bank accounts and business assets, should they fail to pay.
Like many taxpayers, AIA is deeply concerned with the agency’s misconduct and harassment of honest, hardworking taxpayers. AIA is particularly concerned that many Americans—hoping to avoid further trouble—will blindly pay incorrect fees, allowing the agency to carelessly eat away at their hard-earned incomes.
Instances of such severe oversight are unacceptable. The American Taxpayer deserves better.
