AIA and TIGTA Amplify the Need for Taxpayer Advocate Centers to Address Persistent Issues with Inoperable Kiosks
IRS employee abuses
“The American taxpayer deserves better. Reports like this are deeply troubling and underscore the IRS’s ongoing neglect of its service-oriented mission, which the agency has abandoned, punishing hardworking Americans and small businesses in the process.”
This week, AIA is again shining a spotlight on an issue we have raised since our inception. On August 8, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) released a report titled “Lack of Contract Oversight Led to Inoperable Kiosks at Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs).” The report reinforces AIA’s call to repair all broken kiosks at TACs nationwide.
Under AIA CEO Chuck Flint, we have repeatedly documented how IRS modernization remains one of the agency’s most pressing, unmet challenges. AIA believes that under new Acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent, modernization will finally receive the attention it deserves.
Chuck Flint has emphasized in multiple media appearances that the IRS must address the widespread problem of inoperable self-service kiosks at TACs. In a recent interview, he called it unacceptable that many kiosks have been out of service for over a year. Fixing this single issue, he noted, would demonstrate that the IRS is serious about serving taxpayers, rather than harassing them.
AIA thanks TIGTA for again highlighting this problem. The American taxpayer deserves better. Reports like this are deeply troubling and underscore the IRS’s ongoing neglect of its service-oriented mission, which the agency has abandoned, punishing hardworking Americans and small businesses in the process.
AIA remains committed to holding the IRS accountable so this problem is resolved before the 2026 tax season. We look forward to seeing Acting Commissioner Bessent implement reforms that make life easier for taxpayers and small businesses alike.
